My love affair with Bees...
Beekeeping came into my life in 2014 when I bought the property I currently live on in White Center of West Seattle. I was already well into my gardening habit at this point and was excited to create something more at our new digs. With the help of my friends and a little fund raiser (thanks, Angel) I got everything I needed to get started. My first package of bees came that spring and I was mesmerized.
Flash forward a couple years - enter the West Seattle Bee Garden. Instantly knew I had to get involved when I learned about this organization. I've learned so much about bees, bee management, the plants that support them and most importantly the courage to follow my heart by volunteering there. Eventually I was seasoned enough to host field trips to community groups!
Most of my groups were students and do kids have a way of igniting my passion or what! They ask the best questions and always make me think. Hands down, one of the greatest gifts of beekeeping has been sharing in the awe and wonderment of bees with kids.
Through my work with the Bee Garden I was able to meet another great mentor in my life, Bob Redmond with Survivor Bee.
In 2018 I joined Bob's beekeeper team managing 6 hives for his host hive program. Not to brag but.... that year I brought home the most honey and had the highest survival rates on his team. Not only did Bob have host hives but he had an apiary at Seatac airport. A project he created years ago after seeing beehives at O'Hare. In 2019, for various reasons, things changed for Bob and and he passed the airport project on to me. Thus birthing Sunflower Bee Co!
What started as a nebulous dream became a reality for me. I am the proud owner and mother to Sunflower Bee Co. Oh, the dreams I have for her! Come follow along and see what new adventures waiting for a nerdy "beek" with a heart of gold.
